Florida driver's ed online: rules, prices and approved courses
Since August 1, 2025, Florida teens under 18 must take a 6-hour driver education course called DETS before getting a learner's license. It can be done online.

- Who needs it
- Anyone under 18 who has never held a license. Adults 18+ getting a first license take the 4-hour TLSAE (drug and alcohol) course instead.
- The DETS course
- 6 hours, online or in a classroom, from a provider on the FLHSMV's approved list.
- Permit (learner's license) test
- The Class E knowledge exam: 50 questions, 40 correct to pass. Some approved providers can give the official test online for ages 15–17.
- After the permit
- At least 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night) with a licensed driver 21 or older before the full license.
- Parent-taught
- Florida doesn't have a parent-taught course. Parents supervise the practice hours.

What it costs
Approved online teen courses in Florida range from Free to $29.95 on the providers' own sites (checked September 27, 2026). Most run frequent sales, so the price you see may be lower or higher.
