Oklahoma driver's ed online: rules, prices and approved courses
In Oklahoma a parent can teach driver's ed: the teen takes a 30-hour course online and a parent does the 55 hours behind the wheel. A teen who is 15 needs a course to get the permit; at 16 it's optional.

- Who needs it
- A 15-year-old must be enrolled in an approved driver education course to get a learner permit and pass the written test. At 16, driver education becomes optional.
- Parent-taught option
- The student must be at least 15 to start. The parent (or guardian) applies to Service Oklahoma and gets approval before beginning, must hold a valid license, and can't have recent suspensions, active citations or certain violations. The teen can't start behind-the-wheel training until they hold a permit.
- The course
- 30 hours of classroom instruction online from a provider on Service Oklahoma's approved parent-taught list, plus 55 hours behind the wheel with the parent (10 at night).
- Before the driving test
- Age 16 or older, a permit held at least 180 days, 50 supervised hours (10 at night) with a licensed driver 21 or older who has held a license 2+ years, no traffic convictions, and the free online Work Zone Safe course.
- Fees
- The learner permit costs $42.50 when you pass the written test; a failed attempt costs $4.00.
- Approved providers
- Service Oklahoma publishes its list of approved parent-taught providers (August 2026 version, 12 providers); every course on this page is on it. Driver Ed. In a Box is on the list but says it no longer sells its Oklahoma course, so it is left out.
