Virginia driver's ed online: rules, prices and approved courses
In Virginia, which online driver's ed counts depends on whether your teen is homeschooled. Homeschooled teens can use a state-approved online course and have a parent teach the in-car lessons; other teens take the online classroom through a Virginia driving school.

- Who needs it
- Anyone under 18: a state-approved program of 36 classroom periods (30 hours), 7 driving and 7 observation periods, plus a 90-minute parent/teen session. From January 1, 2027, first-time drivers aged 18–20 need it too.
- Homeschooled teens
- The classroom part can be a correspondence (online) course approved by the Virginia Department of Education. A parent can teach the in-car part after DMV authorization (form HS-1).
- Everyone else
- The online classroom must come from a Virginia-licensed driver training school; national online courses don't count. We'll add local schools later.
- Northern Virginia
- In Planning District 8 (Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park), the 90-minute parent/teen session is in person.
- Practice driving
- 45 supervised hours (15 after sunset), certified by a parent, and a learner's permit held for 9 months.

Approved online teen courses in Virginia range from $55 to $119 on the providers' own sites (checked September 27, 2026). Most run frequent sales, so the price you see may be lower or higher.
