Virginia homeschool driver's ed: online classroom courses
Homeschooled Virginia teens can take the classroom part through a Department of Education approved correspondence course, with a parent teaching the in-car lessons. These are the courses on the DMV's list.
Prices and features checked September 27, 2026 on each provider's own site.
This route is for homeschooled teens. Other Virginia teens must take the online classroom through a Virginia-licensed driving school, and national online courses don't count for them.
Virginia rules at a glance
- Who needs it
- Anyone under 18: a state-approved program of 36 classroom periods (30 hours), 7 driving and 7 observation periods, plus a 90-minute parent/teen session. From January 1, 2027, first-time drivers aged 18–20 need it too.
- Homeschooled teens
- The classroom part can be a correspondence (online) course approved by the Virginia Department of Education. A parent can teach the in-car part after DMV authorization (form HS-1).
- Everyone else
- The online classroom must come from a Virginia-licensed driver training school; national online courses don't count. We'll add local schools later.
- Northern Virginia
- In Planning District 8 (Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park), the 90-minute parent/teen session is in person.
- Practice driving
- 45 supervised hours (15 after sunset), certified by a parent, and a learner's permit held for 9 months.
